House bill seeks to mitigate doomsday EMP outages

The emergence of the sun’s most powerful solar flare in six years back on Dec. 14 saw several parts of the United States impacted by shortwave radio blackouts. The incident was followed two months later by an X-class solar flare that barely missed colliding with the Earth.
Also known as CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejections), solar flares, according to NASA, can spark extended radiation storms that can potentially harm satellites, communications systems and ground-based technologies — most notably power grids.

As the lament of questionable messages and content on social media platforms continues to rise among concerned adults, the South Carolina House of Representatives has recently passed a Social Media Regulation Act. The legislation ensures greater parental control on a range of views and topics disseminated over information-sharing websites and applications.
Sponsored by Rep. Weston Newton (R-Bluffton), the House measure mandates age verification and requires parental consent for accounts belonging to minors. To that end, the Regulation Act promotes content restrictions, as well as the reporting and enforcement of potentially provocative subject matter.

As leaders and residents representing communities along the S.C. Highway 41 corridor that will be among the most impacted by the current “road to compromise” design, we felt that it was important to have our voices heard on what has unfortunately turned into a controversial issue.
As more and more special-interest groups that do not live in our communities have injected themselves into the discussion, many have lost sight of the real problem.

1st annual Mount Pleasant Police & Firefighters Ball raises money for three local charities

The goal of the ball, which was co-chaired by Kathy Landing, was to honor police and firefighters, and also to raise funds for organizations that support the efforts of first responders. Ticket sales and sponsors not only covered the full cost of the ball, but also raised nearly $3,000 for each of several non-profit organizations: Lowcountry Firefighter Support Team; the Tri-County Fraternal Order of Police Distressed Officers Fund; and Turn90 (also known as the Turning Leaf Project).
