Week 5 Update

Overview of the Week:
At the beginning of this year, I stood alongside my colleagues in the House Republican Caucus as we laid out the goals for this year’s session. We outlined 5 pillars for a “Foundation for South Carolina’s Success” which included economic prosperity, education reform, limited government, personal freedom, and law and order. As we end week 5 of session I am proud to announce that we are making tremendous progress working through this ambitious list! This week we passed a bill that bans political bias and indoctrination in our classrooms.

Transparency and Integrity in Education PASSES:
The future of South Carolina is dependent on the next generation, which is why I supported the Transparency and Integrity in Education Act. This bill will make sure our students learn a broad scope of history and will not be indoctrinated through the lens of liberal leaning teachings. I am confident that our colleagues in the Senate along with Gov. McMaster are all committed to making sure our students receive a high-quality education that is not clouded by bias, and that parents are assured the utmost input and transparency. For the record, there is a lot of tremendous hyperbole and inaccuracy both on social media and in emails sent to me from all over the state. This bill is NOT AT ALL about hiding the ugly truths of our nation's past, nor about ignoring the history of any ethnic group, race or gender. Quite the opposite, it bans any political bias that would distort the truth about our history. For those who don't believe we have bias and indoctrination in our schools today, please consider taking the time to speak to other parents of students. Hundreds of hours of testimony were presented last year as part of the research and due diligence for this bill. Our Education and Public Works Chair as well as the sponsor of this bill are both long-time former teachers. It was their hard work last year, along with the proactive schedule put forth by this year's leadership that brought us to the point where we could pass this bill so early in the session. Here is the link to H. 3728.

Stopping the Revolving Door in our Prisons:
To make South Carolina a safer place for us all to raise our families, it is time we stop the revolving door for repeat criminals. H. 3532, was passed out of the Criminal Laws Subcommittee this week and will be taken up by the full Judiciary Committee next week. This bill creates an additional criminal offense and penalty for committing an additional violent crime while out on bond and would result in automatic revocation of bond for the first violent crime and a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 5 years.

Judge Elections:
On Wednesday, a Joint Assembly of Senate and House members voted for several open and contested races for judges throughout SC. Perhaps the most important election was for an open seat on the SC Supreme Court. We elected Judge Gary Hill to our Supreme Court. I am proud to have cast my vote for Gary who will replace Justice Kay Hearn who is retiring. Judge Hill made it clear during the selection process that he does not support legislating from the bench. The separation of powers is a critical element to our form of government and is essential to respecting the rule of law. Congratulations to the Honorable David Garrison "Gary" Hill.

Mount Pleasant Town Council Goes to Columbia:
Municipal Association Day in Columbia was this past Tuesday. Our Town Administrator and Clerk of Council organized a reception for all State Legislators. It was great to visit with my friends and former colleagues on Town Council, and to hear their concerns and requests regarding problems to be solved for our citizens. I have co-sponsored several bills that address specific issues for our community, including one that would allow Accommodations Taxes that have always been required to be used for attracting tourism to now be allowed to help pay to encourage workforce housing. We can't keep attracting more people to Mount Pleasant to visit, yet not have anywhere that hospitality, healthcare, first responders, education and other vital workers can afford to live. Thanks to the Mount Pleasant Town Council and Staff for hosting such a wonderful event!
